There is no promise here, nor is there anything in the tendencies of Christ-like living, to lead us to anticipate that guidance in regard to matters of prudence or expediency or temporal advantage will follow from such a transfigured life. All such matters are still to be determined in the proper fashion, by the exercise of our own best judgment and common-sense.

'Shortly! and here am I, a Christian man for the last half century perhaps; and have I got much further on in my course? Have I brought the sin that used to trouble me much down, and is my character much more noble, Christ-like, than it was long years ago? Would other people say that it is? Instead of 'shortly' we ought to put 'slowly' for the most of us.

He sees the vice and meanness of those we allow to pass for orthodox, and when he sees also the complacency of the better part, he is unconvinced. We praise the sweetness of the healing waters of Christ-like charity, but despite our gospel he never gets it, never.

But how much more useful would good, sound, sensible and truly Christian preachers be, who always talked plain Christian truth, and pressed it home in a loving, Christ-like spirit. Heard Mr. Curtis last night. His text and introduction were good; but the sermon was good for nothing. Heard Mr. Pea this afternoon.

Plain questions, questions that any man can answer; questions that go to the root of the whole matter. If your faith does that, it is genuine; if it does not, it is not. And do not trust either to forms, or to your freedom from forms. They will not save your souls, they will not make you more Christ-like. They will not help you to pardon, purity, holiness, blessedness.

How effectual such a witness may be none who have not seen its power can suppose. Example does tell. A holy life curbs evil, ashamed to show itself in that pure presence. A good man or woman reveals the ugliness of evil by showing the beauty of holiness. More converts would be made by a Christ-like Church than by many sermons.

In order to benefit you, it became necessary for me to enter into your state, to have an experimental knowledge, an endurance and suffering of the same state. By this experience I have been brought into closer relation to God, partaking more fully of the Christ-like nature by being rendered capable of bearing the infirmities of others.

The East India Company an unwilling partner of Carey Calcutta opened to the Mission by his appointment as Government teacher of Bengali Meeting of 1802 grows into the Lall Bazaar mission Christ-like work among the poor, the sick, the prisoners, the soldiers and sailors and the natives Krishna Pal first native missionary in Calcutta Organisation of subordinate stations Carey's "United Missions in India" The missionary staff thirty strong The native missionaries The Bengali church self-propagating Carey the pioneer of other missionaries Benares Burma and Indo-China Felix Carey Instructions to missionaries The missionary shrivelled into an ambassador Adoniram and Ann Judson Jabez Carey Mission to Amboyna Remarkable letter from Carey to his third son.

So, I think, if we give a due depth of significance to that name 'peacemaker, we shall find that this grace worthily completes the whole linked series, and is the very jewel which clasps the whole chain of Christian and Christ-like characteristics. I. How are Christ's peacemakers made?

He saw it in the black looks and averted eyes of many of the officials and even of their wives, but as yet its mutterings had not reached his ear. Some to whom he had endeared himself heard, and were fiercely indignant that such a sweet, Christ-like spirit, as their pastor's, should suffer pain through such allusions.
