Price's son, Brandeth, and Wilson Ogden, lived some miles from the village, and sometimes one or the other of them did not get to a meeting of the Board until the business before it had been despatched. But they always attended punctually if there was a horse or a mule to be had in time, and made no trouble when they came. George Purvis lived just outside of the village.

I say, he puts great difference between these, and that other sort that say, When will the Sabbath be gone, that we may be at our worldly business? The first he calleth a blessed man, but brandeth the other for an unsanctified worldling.

Spits, square and round, and various sizes. Bearers. Crooks. Moulding boards for pastry. A boulting tub for meal. A little table. A spice cupboard. A chest for oatmeal. A trough. Hanging and other shelves. Here follows the return of pewter, brass, and other vessels belonging to the kitchen: Fire shoves and tongs. A cullender. A pewter baking-pan. Kettles of brass. A skillet. A brandeth.

It seems Alice is growing very pretty and very popular. She said she was afraid Alice had taken, a liking to that Brandeth fellow, who's only a clerk. So Mrs. Fisher intends taking Alice to the seashore this summer, to an exclusive resort, of course, but one where there will be excitement and plenty of young gentlemen." At the remembrance Margaret gave a little contemptuous laugh.

Morrison paid more than twice as much for the advertisement of his never-dying hygiene." The committee described how Morrison's nostrums often contained powerful poisons, and then continued: "Morrison is forgotten, and Brandeth is on the high road to the same distinction.

Tom Selden, Harvey Davis, George Purvis, Dr. Price's youngest son, Brandeth, and Wilson Ogden, were chosen, and these, with the addition of Harry, made up the Board of Directors of the Crooked Creek Telegraph Company. "Well," said Kate, as the council arose and adjourned, "I hope we'll settle the rest of our business as easily as we have settled this part."

Several times he said to Brandeth Price and Harvey Ogden that he didn't see why he shouldn't be something more than a mere Director, and a remark that Harvey once made, that if Harry and Kate had not chosen to ask him to join them he would not have been even a Director, made no impression upon him.

"Dat little shiny screw's 'bout as much as you own." As for the members of the Board, they were radiant. Each one of them, except Brandeth Price, explained some portion of the instruments to some of the bystanders. As for Brandeth, he had not an idea what was to be done with anything. But he had a vote in the Board. He never forgot that.

Balls, parties, receptions there would be, and trips to the seashore and all the other society manoeuvers, made ostensibly to introduce Alice to the world; but if the truth were told in cold blood all this was simply a parading of the girl before a number of rich and marriageable men. Poor Harry Brandeth! She recalled many marriages of friends and acquaintances.

After some further conversation on the subject, it was thought best to attend to present business rather than future prospects, and to appoint committees to collect the money due the company. Harry and Tom Selden were delegated to visit the mica-mine people, while Harvey, Wilson Ogden, and Brandeth Price composed the committee to collect what was due from private individuals.
