I may put it rather crudely when I say that pictures like this are supposed to exert a power on the man who, for example, would beat his wife, so that love will be his after inspiration. Anyhow, ethical pictures are painted with some such intention belief. Now, art has great influence, but I do not believe this or any other picture would stop a man beating his wife if he wanted to.

Now he found them direct and rather stern. "Wilfred," said Gardener Jim, "don't you be a 'tarnal fool." Wilfred said nothing, but immediately, he could not tell why, he seemed to be looking upon a picture of Annie standing among the flowers in her little plain dress. His heart was beating faster, and he said to himself that, after all, it would be sort of nice if Annie would come home.

I can not imagine my eyes dim or my hair gray. I can not imagine my heart beating slowly. I can not realize a day when the warmth and beauty of life will have changed into cold and dullness."

"It was in the night, before the moon went away, and it went on and on beating in the trees. I thought I was asleep, and then I knew I was awake; you were asleep, and I pushed you to listen, but you couldn't wake, you were so asleep; then the moon went away, and the noise went on. How did they make the noise?"

Oh, it was a crying pity that it need ever land anything so fleet and strong and sure should fly forever! But if they must rest, those beating wings the old R.F.C. toast went singing through her head and she flung it out into the moonlight, smiling "Happy landings! Happy landings, you!" The next day was the one that brought to White Orchards what was to be known for many moons as "the Big Storm."

Would she be satisfied with the rule of his ancestral hall, and the dispensing of hospitalities to the county? No, one may guess: no woman is ever satisfied. But she would have to relinquish her game, counting her good round half of the honours. Somewhat more, on the whole. Without beating, she certainly had accomplished the miracle of bending him.

She holds out to him, not one, but two hands. His whole face changes; a gladness, that has in it something of heaven, fills his eyes. Taking the little trembling hands softly in his own, he lays them on his beating heart. For a moment only, then he lets them fall; and then, before this divine joy has quite left him, he finds himself, once more alone. "What sudden anger's this?

The old dog who lay in front of the granary door raised his head at their approach and lifted one ear, as if to command silence. Tom helped the doctor out of the buggy. He tried to unhitch the horse, but the beating of his heart nearly choked him the fear of what might be in the granary. He waited for the exclamation from the doctor which would proclaim him a murderer.

Doubtless, he feels the great change of the year, and distinguishes winter from spring; winter as the time of snow and the fireside; spring as the return of grass and flowers, the time of St. Valentine's day and a beating heart. And he feels love after a fashion.

He was halt and obscure, but I thought I saw a mind beating against the elms and stones of the village, and repelled by the concrete, asphalt, and lodging-houses of the seaside place. But I am impressionable, too. It may have been my fancy. What the boy finished with was: "There's no chance here. You never hear of anything." You never heard of anything.
