At first, however, and for quite a number of years, it was impossible to demonstrate the theory by finding the distinct species of micro- organisms which produced the troubles. We have already seen that there are several different species of bacteria which are associated with this general class of diseases, but that no specific one has any particular relation to a definite type of inflammation.

We should at once conclude that the bacteria and micrococci must exist in the air, perhaps not in the state in which we find them in the water, but that their germs or eggs are floating in the atmosphere.

The wise cure of infections is not to use antibiotics to suppress the bacteria while simultaneously whipping the immune system; most people, including most medical doctors, do not realize that antibiotics also goose the immune system into super efforts.

From this arises naturally the question, what quantity of vapor must be produced in a room in order to kill the bacteria in its atmosphere? If we know the size of the room, shall we be able tell? These questions have not yet been answered, but the experiments which will settle them will be soon made, I have no doubt, and I have indicated the lines upon which they will be made.

This hypothesis has certainly more facts in support of it now than it had when Sir Thomas Watson gave utterance to it in 1837. And when another epidemic of influenza occurs, we may look with some confidence to having the hypothesis either refuted or confirmed by those engaged in the systematic study of atmospheric bacteria.

The disease progresses more rapidly in plants that have made a succulent, luxurious growth, while those with hard, woody stems resist it somewhat. The disease is due to the invasion of bacteria, which enter the leaves through the aid of leaf-eating insects, or through the roots. They plug the water-carrying vessels of the stem, shutting off the water and food supply of the plant.

To meet this emergency and loss the farmer has another method of enriching the soil, again depending upon bacteria. This is the so- called green manuring. Here certain plants which seize nitrogen from the air are cultivated upon the field to be fertilized, and, instead of harvesting a crop, it is ploughed into the soil. Or perhaps the tops may be harvested, the rest being ploughed into the soil.

When the attempt is made to determine the relation of the different kinds of ripening to different kinds of bacteria, it has thus far met with extremely little success.
