I meditated my next move, and now resolved on another try at community life.... The Eos Artwork Studios, founded in the little New York State town of Eos, by the celebrated eccentric author and lecturer, Roderick Spalton. I was in such impatience to reach Eos that I did not cross over to Haberford, to drop in on my father.

The company that day consisted of the most cultivated men of Venice merchants, princes, noblemen, artists, and lovers of art and among them were many who, like Faliero himself, were skilled critics of artwork. When these people were ushered in to dinner their eyes fell upon the butter lion, and they forgot for what purpose they had entered the dining-room.

Two neighbour farmers, who had come over for a bit of gossip, stooped, their hands on their knees, bowed with astonishment, as if they had beheld an apparition. One of the "boys" told me the two held silence for a long time till I was entirely out of sight again, and after. Then one exclaimed, "air they any more luny fellers like thet, back at them Artwork shops?"

She told herself that her artwork was more poignant when the sun was at its fullest; but really it had been from an avoidance of the yellow school buses that she would have encountered. Subconsciously she wanted to spend as much time with him as she could so she began to disregard the policy of him going to bed at 9:00.

The Brons and the Neeblings had been the true antiquarians of the world. And they had taken centuries to gather their collection. A dinosaur skeleton stared at them. The salvaged carved prow of a galleon leaned against a gaping whale's jaw. A model of the first atomic pile supported a score of leaning spears, but the feathers and artwork on those spears were now stains and shreds.

"But, mark my words," says the old smarty, "I'll show you it takes brains in addition to woman's wiles and artwork to make a decent clean-up in this little one-cylinder town." "If you just had a little more self-confidence," I says, "you might of gone to the top; lack of faith in yourself is all that's kept you back. Too bad!"

Preliminary to a study of what Wagner and his disciples entitle the "Artwork of the Future," let us take a swift survey of music as a medium of expression for the beautiful, and some of the forms which it has assumed.

Gingerly, I put on the ragged suit.... I stood in front of the Eos Artwork Studios. I saw a boy coming down the path from one of the buildings. "Would you tell me please where I can find the Master?" I asked, reverently. The boy gave me a long stare. "Oh, you mean Mr. Spalton?" "Yes." "That's him ... there ... choppin' wood."

The remains of those who'd run into Traiti suicide commandos were even more eloquent. But these adolescent females offering glasses to the five from the Hermnaen weren't fighters. They were no taller than Tarlac, and he had adapted enough, thanks to the shipboard artwork, to think of them as attractive young ladies.

But however varied the mode of creation may be, an almost unvarying characteristic of the production of really precious and lasting artwork is ungrudging painstaking, such as we find described in William Hunt's "Talks about Art": "If you could see me dig and groan, rub it out and start again, hate myself and feel dreadfully!
