Painted toys are, many of them, highly dangerous, those painted green especially, as the colour generally consists of Scheele's green arsenite of copper.

The iodine liberated by the reaction 2FeCl + 2HI = 2HCl + 2FeCl + I is reduced by the addition of 50 cc. of sodium thiosulphate solution and the excess thiosulphate is titrated with standard iodine and requires 7.85 cc. 45 cc. I solution = 45.95 cc. Na S O solution; 45 cc. As O solution = 45.27 cc. I solution. 1 cc. arsenite solution = 0.005160 gram As O . !Answer!: 23.77%.

The processes included under the term !chlorimetry! comprise those employed to determine chlorine, hypochlorites, bromine, and hypobromites. The reagent employed is sodium arsenite in the presence of sodium bicarbonate. The reaction in the case of the hypochlorites is NaClO + Na AsO > Na AsO + NaCl.

The sodium arsenite may be prepared from pure arsenious oxide, as described below, and is stable for considerable periods; but commercial oxide requires resublimation to remove arsenic sulphide, which may be present in small quantity.

When touched by a drop of the solution the paper turns blue until the hypochlorite has all been reduced and an excess of the arsenite has been added. Bleaching powder consists mainly of a calcium compound which is a derivative of both hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids. Its formula is CaClOCl.

Children's paint-boxes are very dangerous toys for a child to play with; many of the paints are poisonous, containing arsenic, lead, gamboge, &c, and a child, when painting, is apt to put the brush into his mouth, to absorb the superabundant fluid. Of all the colours, the green paint is the most dangerous, as it is frequently composed of arsenite of copper arsenic and copper two deadly poisons.

It is injurious to wear a green dress, if the colour have been imparted to it by means of Scheele's green, which is arsenite of copper a deadly poison. I have known the arsenic to fly off from a green dress in the form of powder, and to produce, in consequence, ill-health.

Confectionery is often poisoned with Prussian-blue, Antwerp-blue, gamboge, ultramarine, chrome yellow, red-lead, white-lead, vermilion, Brunswick-green, and Scheele's green, or arsenite of copper! Never buy any confectionery that is colored or painted. Vinegar is made of whisky, or of oil of vitriol. Pickles have verdigris in them to make them a pretty green.

Run in the arsenite solution from a burette until no further reaction takes place on the starch-iodide paper when touched by a drop of the solution of bleaching powder. Repeat the titration, using a second 25 cc. portion.

Wash the feet in warm water with borax, and if this don't cure, use a solution of permanganate to destroy the fetor; about five grains to each ounce of water. The following is recommended as a reliable emmenagogue in many cases of functional amenorrhoea: Bichloride of mercury, Arsenite of sodium, aa gr. iij. Sulphate of strychnine, gr. iss. Carbonate of potassium, Sulphate of iron, aa gr. xlv.
