Years later a fourth biography appeared by an unknown author, tradition being the only evidence that it was written by the Apostle John so entirely different in its general make-up and contents, that but for the name of its subject and a very few passages in it, no one would ever take it to be about the same person that formed the subject of the other three.

Here, I do not understand, as if the apostle had denied a virtuous course of life to be the way to heaven; but that a man without grace, though he have natural gifts, yet he shall not obtain privilege to go to heaven, and be the son of God. Though a man without grace may have a will to be saved, yet he cannot have that will God's way.

It is almost as universally acknowledged that the work ascribed by the second century elder to the apostle Matthew cannot be our first gospel; for its language has not the characteristics which other translations from Hebrew or Aramaic lead us to expect, while the completeness of its narrative exceeds what is suggested by the words of Papias.

In this same picture, likewise, he showed a power of foreshortening things viewed from below upwards which was truly marvellous, as may still be seen to-day in the feet of the said Apostle, for this was a difficulty that he solved completely, in contrast with the old rude manner, which, as I said a little before, used to make all the figures on tip-toe; which manner lasted up to his day, without any other man correcting it, and he, by himself and before any other, brought it to the excellence of our own day.

And every morning since that time up to the present day, Mohammedans have been summoned to prayer with the following words: "God is great; there is no god but the Lord. Mohammed is the Apostle of God. Come unto prayer! Come unto salvation! God is great. There is no god but the Lord." Another change was effected by Mohammed.

"Her husband gave it to her," resumes Caroline, with a shrug of her shoulders. "Ah!" "Yes, a four hundred franc dress! It's the very finest quality of velvet." "Four hundred francs!" cries Adolphe, striking the attitude of the apostle Thomas. "But then there are two extra breadths and enough for a high waist!"

Amidst the amenities and sentimentalities of modern life there is much necessity for remembering that the Apostle of love was a 'son of thunder, and that it was the lips which summoned Israel to the fight, and chanted hymns of triumph over the corpses borne down by the rushing Kishon, which also said: 'Let them that love Him be as the sun when he shineth forth in his strength. If you love God, you will surely be a strong man as well as an emotional and affectionate Christian.

President Theodore Roosevelt, representing the majesty of the Republic, stayed us when we might have won our own liberties in the revolt that was provoked by the election of Senator Apostle Reed Smoot. Misled by political and personal advisers, the President procured delays in the Smoot investigation. He seduced senators from their convictions.

Yet in his campaign I was followed through the Mormon settlements by Charles W. Penrose, a polygamist, since an apostle of the Church, and at that time editor of the Church's official organ, the Deseret News. Joseph F. Smith replied, "Yes," speaking for himself and apparently for President Woodruff. "And when" I demanded "when did I ever claim to represent or misrepresent you in politics?

I told Euricius that I needed the signs only for my friends; that I would not go myself, since it was too far for my advanced age; that, moreover, I should see the Great Apostle myself to-morrow, and he would repeat to me the choicest parts of his sermon." "How! Thou wilt not be there? Thou must go!" said Vinicius.
