Ovid's first important work was the Amores, which was certainly out by the year 8 B.C. although in a different form from that in which we now have it.
The word amores, in the plural, does not signify merely the abstract feeling of love, the application of which is as various as are the objects which inspire it; for example, the divine love, the parental, the filial, and the sexual.
He brings love with good morals and has somewhat besides. His station in life indeed is not very illustrious, for, like me, he is only a parson. But Macrobius saith, 'Amores sunt sicut flores' Maidens are like flowers, that is to say, they soon wither; and as Drexelius Trismegistus hath it, 'Sæpius ima petet melius qui scandere novit' He often sinks into the depths who seeks the heights.

"The Annals" open with his accession, and Tacitus has narrated the vicissitudes of his reign.
