There is no belief here, as is common in many other parts of the Philippines, that the spirits of unborn or still-born children form the chief recruits for the army of evil spirits. The after-birth is placed in a small jar together with bamboo leaves, "so that the child will grow like that lusty plant," and is then intrusted to an old man, usually a relative.

CLEANSING. The placenta, or after-birth, by which the foetus is nourished while in embryo, should be removed soon after calving. Generally, it will come away without any assistance. This is what is called "cleansing after calving." When, however, it remains for some time, its function having been performed, it becomes a foreign body, exciting uterine contractions, and therefore injurious.

But now commenced the pains and perils of the after-birth. By a maiden effort an author rarely makes enemies. His fellow-writers are not yet prepared to consider him as a rival; if he be tolerably rich, they unconsciously trust that he will not become a regular, or, as they term it, "a professional" author: he did something just to be talked of; he may write no more, or his second book may fail.

Or, rather, I was with the Past, in the bowers of my springtide of life and hope! It was an after-birth of youth my love for that young heart! It is, indeed, only in maturity that we know how lovely were our earliest years!

No butcher, except he be well acquainted with the treatment of a breeding stock, ought to be a judge of breeding animals. With fat stock one of the judges ought always to be a first-class butcher. In natural labour the after-birth generally comes away soon after calving.

All the alan were drunk and the mother of Balbalaoga of Dona said to them, "Aponibolinayen, Balbalaoga is your brother, for he was the after-birth of Awig, which they put in the tabalang which they sent down the stream. So I picked him up, for I had no child to inherit all my things."

LEUCORRHOEA. This is a chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the genital tract, that is associated with more or less of a discharge from the vulva. It is common in animals that abort, or retain the "after-birth." The discharge may be white, sticky, albuminous, and without odor, or it may be chocolate colored and foul smelling. The tail and hind parts are usually soiled with it.

If the after-birth comes away of its own accord, as will generally happen when due patience has been exercised, it may be severed from the child and put aside for the inspection of the doctor, for he should learn by examining it whether everything has come away properly. The cord must be securely tied in two places with the sterilized bobbin mentioned in the list of articles for confinement.

If in the city, the after-birth may be burned in the furnace or range; it should be well covered with coal. In the country the after-birth can be buried in a deep hole. During the first two or three days the vulvar dressings should be changed from every three to six hours, and at all times as often as they are soiled.
