Another road was constructed from Behmaroo village to the Siah Sung heights and yet another from the south-eastern gateway direct to the Balla Hissar, on both of which there were bridges across the Cabul river. Along the northern face of Cabul from Deh Afghan to the Balla Hissar, a road broad enough for guns was made, and another broad road cut through the lower Balla Hissar.

Our progress is a tribute to the spirit of the Afghan people, to the resolve of our coalition, and to the might of the United States military. And tonight, thanks to them, we are winning the war on terror. For many Americans, these four months have brought sorrow, and pain that will never completely go away.

After the death of Topal Osman and the defeat of his army Nadir proceeded to invest Bagdad; but being alarmed at the account of a serious revolt in the province of Fars, he readily listened to the terms which the ruler of the city proposed, which were that the governments of Turkey and Persia should repossess the countries that belonged to them in the reign of Sultan Hasan before the Afghan invasion.

Quetta, in Beluchistan, lying directly on the Afghan frontier, was the gate of the line of march towards Kandahar; and if England was summoning the Indian princes to its aid the situation could be none other than critical.

For example, the head of the Afghan mission to Moscow thus frankly expressed his reasons for friendship with Soviet Russia, in an interview printed by the official Soviet organ, Izvestia: "I am neither Communist nor Socialist, but my political programme so far is the expulsion of the English from Asia.

Gladstone has 'insanely' continued war, if moderately successful, may make even yet new 'vengeance' of Afghans seem 'necessary to our prestige' such are the immoral principles dominant among Whigs as well as Tories; any such embroilments may animate Ireland to insurrectionary defiance; further Afghan fighting may lead to Indian revolt.... The nation has found that no possible Ministry will make common justice its rule.

Usually, also, the shorter the weapon is, the more fatal are the conflicts in which it is employed. The old French "Briquet," the Afghan "Charay," and the Goorka "Kukkri," exemplify this fact in the history of arms. In the latter point it differs from the Assegai, which is worked by the Kafirs to the finest temper. It is called by the Arabs Kubabah, by the Somal Goasa.

"Oh dear me! if I had only a chariot and four to go down with, and somebody to dress me and find my boots and my hat and my gloves, then it would have been worth while to go. I mean to make out a list of wishes, in case somebody should grant me the power to have them." She took out a little blank-book from her pocket, and began to write down: A chariot and four, man to drive, striped afghan, etc.

"Deen! deen! deen!" he cried, dancing around as he shrilly voiced the fanatic call to massacre the dread call which through the centuries has drenched with human blood a thousand shrines, both Moslem mosques and Hindu temples. "Subah!" shouted the Afghan general, half rising, his hand on his sword hilt. "Stop that, you son of a dog, or I will make you meat for jackals. Subah!"

Accordingly the Afghan chief soon lent a ready ear to the representations of the Emperor's party, and swiftly presented himself at the head of an army within twenty miles of Dehli. In this strait the Minister's personal qualities saved him.
