Formerly those sent to the less important countries, were called chargès des affaires, who are ministers of a lower grade. The name, usually written chargès d'affaires, is French, and is pronounced shar-zha-daf-fair, accented on the first and last syllables. It means a person having charge of the affairs of his nation.
