Gold-dust is the only coin of the realm; and travellers who would pass north of the Protectorate must buy it on the coast. Its weight, the 16th of an ounce, never varies; but the value ranges from 4s. 6d. to 5s., according as the ounce is worth 3l. 12s. to 4l. 10s., the average being assumed at 4l. The benna = 2 akis.

Besides the 10l. 10s. 11d, which came in on New-year’s day, there came in on the 2nd and 4th 3l. 0s. 7d. But when now we were again without a penny, there came in 5s., and 6d., and 1s. Also 2l. with Ecclesiastes ix. 10, and 1l. 10s. for rent. Jan. 7.

"In the hall" they find furniture which they value at 1l. 4s.; "in the great parlour" 7l.; "in the little parlour" 3l.; "in the study or boys' chamber" 2l. l3s.; and so on through the other rooms "Mrs. Powell's chamber," as the best furnished of all, counting for 8l. 4s., while "Mr. Powell's study" goes for only 1l. l4s.
