Mahmud was born about the year 357 of the Hegira or 350, according to some authorities and, as astrologers say, with many happy omens expressed in the horoscope of his life.

Three years after he was elected District Attorney of Cavaleras County, and held the office until 1859. He was subsequently a member of the State Senate. In 1863 he was elected a Representative from California to the Thirty-Eighth Congress, and was successively re-elected to the Thirty-Ninth and Fortieth Congresses. 356, 357, 358, 510, 575.
