It appears that the Persian branch of the Arian race, which had made itself a home in the country lying south and south-east of Media, between the 32nd parallel and the Persian gulf, had acknowledged some subjection to the Median kings during the time of their greatness.

Ignorance of the localities, and the darkness and confusion consequent on a hastily planned night-attack, rendered the gallant efforts of the troops useless, and, after a considerable loss in killed and wounded, they were withdrawn. Lieutenant-Colonel Pattoun, of the 32nd Foot, led the attack with great gallantry.

His column was composed of the 1st Royals, the 32nd regiment, the 83rd regiment, the Montreal Volunteer Rifles, Globensky and Leclerc's Volunteers, a strong force of cavalry in all, over two thousand men, supported by eight pieces of field artillery and well supplied with provision and ammunition transport. The troops bivouacked for the night at St Martin, and advanced on the morning of the 14th.

The other pillars towards the sea, and those to the 27th inclusive of the Piazzetta, are all seven feet round at the base, and then there is a most curious and delicate crescendo of circumference to the 36th, thus: The 28th, 7 ,, 3 The 33rd, 7 ,, 6 29th, 7 ,, 4 34th, 7 ,, 8 30th, 7 ,, 6 35th, 7 ,, 8 31st, 7 ,, 7 36th, 10 ,, 4-1/3 32nd, 7 ,, 5

The main body, turning to the right, advanced to a point between the Motee Mahal and the old mess-house of the 32nd. It was between this spot and the Residency, a distance of three-quarters of a mile, that the strength of the enemy was concentrated; and here the fiercest conflict, after that of forcing the bridge, occurred.

In a sortie made on the 7th July, for the purpose of examining a house strongly held by the enemy, to ascertain whether or not a mine was being driven from it, Lieutenant Lawrence, 32nd Regiment, was the first to mount the ladder and to enter the window of the house, in effecting which he had his pistol knocked out of his hand by one of the enemy.

A similar opinion was apparently entertained by the Sirdar and staff, for gallopers were sent to the officer in charge of the two guns of the 32nd Battery left on the west side of the wall in the main thoroughfare, to cease firing at once.

"The course of the action was as follows: The advanced guard formed up at about eight hundred yards from the position and the main body in rear. The 32nd Pioneers then advanced to the attack. One section, 'C' Company, extended in support. Two sections, 'C' Company, 'A' Company, in reserve.

"We're trying to get back to the firing-line but we're all lost there's eight of us." "I'm trying to get to the 32nd Field Ambulance d'you know the way?" "Yes; go right ahead there," he pointed, "and keep well down off the hills you'll see the beach when you've gone for a mile or so " "How far is it?" "'Bout four miles;" and then, "Got a match?" "Yes but it's dangerous to light up."
