Alexandre Chambon, a labourer, more than eighty years old, condemned for life in 1741, for attending a religious meeting, was released in 1769, on the entreaty of Voltaire, after being a galley-slave for twenty-eight years. His friends had forgotten him, and on his release he was utterly destitute and miserable. In 1772, three galley-slaves were liberated from their chains.

'To a man who has survived all the companions of his youth ... this full-peopled world is a dismal solitude. Rambler, No. 69. See ante, i. 63. They met on these days in the years 1772, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 81, and 3. The ministry had resigned on the 20th. Ante, p. 139, note 1.

Thus Casanova ended his Memoirs, concluding his narrative with his sojourn at Trieste, in January 1774, where he had remained, except for a few excursions, since the 15th November 1772. He was forty-nine years of age.

As a result of this incident a new bridge was constructed, though it was afterwards replaced by the present stone structure over which a ceaseless traffic rushes in and out of Paris to-day. It was this present bridge over which Louis XV was the first to pass on September 22, 1772. The Chateau de Neuilly was a favourite suburban residence of Louis Philippe.

The "Gaspee," a royal vessel of war, had interfered legally and illegally with the smuggling trade. On June 9, 1772, while in pursuit a vessel, she ran aground. That night the ship was attacked by armed men, who captured and burned her. The colonial authorities were indifferent: the perpetrators were not tried; they were not prosecuted; they were not even arrested.

"Her method of making a fire was equally singular and curious, having no other materials for that purpose than two hard sulphurous stones. Hearne regained Prince of Wales's Fort on Hudson Bay in June, 1772.

Voltaire to M. De Chabanon, 9 mars, 1772. Dryden would have agreed with Voltaire. This was true of Coleridge, Wordsworth, and still more of Southey who in some respects was not unlike Dryden.

At that point a large monument has been erected on the right and a small one on the left bank of the stream. Monuments have also been erected along the bank of this stream, as indicated on the maps.
